Paid as an apprentice while you train. Pay varies by employer.

The route

How people get in and grow

Research and industry run on software, networks and data. You can start in IT support or as a data technician and move up to software developer or data analyst, all through apprenticeships.

  1. 1

    Start in support

Digital support and IT solutions technicians keep people and systems working, and learn how a whole organisation runs on technology.

Unlocks: Digital support technician or IT solutions technician apprenticeship (Level 3)

  2. 2

    Work with data

The data technician apprenticeship teaches you to collect, clean and report the data research depends on.

Unlocks: Data technician apprenticeship (Level 3)

  3. 3

    Build and analyse

Software developer and data analyst apprenticeships lead to writing code and finding answers in data.

Unlocks: Software developer or Data analyst apprenticeship (Level 4)

Levels and apprenticeship standards from the Department for Education Find an apprenticeship service, counted from vacancies open today. Wages are the middle of what employers actually advertised, not a promise about any one job, and they do not always rise with the level: pay depends on the employer and the year as much as the qualification. These are the levels within this line of work, not a guarantee that one apprenticeship leads to the next.
